First Past The Post System Unfairly Protects Two Major Parties And Is Undemocratic

Wales Green Party leader, Pippa Bartolotti, has spoken out against Ed Balls' message that people should ignore the smaller parties in Wales.

"I'm fed up with politicians like Balls telling people they shouldn't vote for what they believe in. The point of democracy is to allow voters a choice, and advocating tactical voting often means asking people not to vote for the issues they care most about. If people want Green, they need to vote Green."

Speaking in Cardiff today, Ed Balls stated that voters should ignore the small parties as only Labour or the Conservatives can form a government. Bartolotti argues that the Greens are the only nationwide party to commit to urgent and ambitious action on climate change and have an effective strategy to address poverty. Bartolotti continued:

"Small parties are more important than ever in this election, given that neither of the main parties are on course to win anything like an overall majority. More Green voices in Westminster will allow us to fight to protect our environment and reverse austerity. More Green votes will help us change this phoney first-past-the-post election system and change it to a truly democratic one of Proportional Representation. By 2020 your every vote will count! "
