The Wales Green Party is today celebrating the move by twenty four of the UK’s most respected academic and professional institutions in calling for governments to take urgent action on climate change. The Climate Communique was issued by a diverse group of organisations including the Learned Society of Wales, which comprises over 350 distinguished Fellows in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, arts, humanities and social sciences.
Wales Green Party member, Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, and Professor of Swansea University Medical School, Gareth Brenton said:
“Climate change is one of the greatest challenges to mankind. The Learned Society of Wales has joined other leading institutions to call on governments to act now. Wales and the Welsh government must grasp this opportunity to lead the way with policies for a zero carbon future, to mitigate climate change effects. This will require new economic and social models for a sustainable society.”
The Climate Communique says that to tackle climate change, governments, including that of the UK, must seize the opportunity at climate talks in Paris in December to negotiate an agreement based on the latest scientific evidence. The evidence states that we must transition to a zero-carbon world soon after 2050.
Anthony Slaughter, deputy leader of Wales Green Party, supports the statement: “We know that climate change is one of the worst environmental hazards facing human society and welcome this evidence based statement from renowned institutions such as the Royal Society, Royal Geographical Society, Wellcome Trust and LSW. Talks in Paris later this year give governments an opportunity to transition to a low carbon economy. We urge the Welsh and UK governments to show leadership and ensure global environmental cooperation.”
